Abbottabad was and is a truly beautiful and peaceful place. Surrounded on all sides by mountains, its the gateway to the Northern Areas of Pakistan. The Karakoram highway passes through it carrying goods and people to the remote areas in the North and onwards to/from China. The Himalayas start here and beyond Abbottabad the mountains get higher and higher. Its a truly amazing place with so much exploring to do. Pity that a lot of people pass through it on their way to destinations up the Karakoram.People!

The town was built by the British with British army soldiers stationed here. You still see a lot of buildings from the time of the brits including the Abbott House where Major Abbott (the fist Deputy Commissioner) lived and loads of old army barracks.

The town is famous for its climate and scenery, it’s schools (and increasingly the private medical colleges that are popping up), pakoras at the Ilyasi Mosque, NWFP’s second largest medical college and hospital, and now Osama bin Laden’s death!
